EDMed Professional Development

The need for EDMed®

EDMed was developed to provide support and assistance for teachers working with children with serious illnesses. While these students don't want to be treated like patients in the classroom, many will require modified work and special consideration to reach their full academic potential.

Research indicates that 15% of Australian children under the age of 16 have long-term health conditions, and that 3.5% of children have a chronic illness. Due to medical advances, most of these children can be accommodated in mainstream school. However, 40% of these children will experience challenges after a period of hospitalisation.

As teachers, it's important to consider the whole of the child's wellbeing when planning for the student - socially, emotionally, cognitively and physically.
